Career Clusters & Industry Codes
Every career Utah teaches, what it pays nationally, and how much school it takes. Fourteen clusters, the real job titles inside each one, and the industry codes you can search employers with.
Not sure where to start?
Pick anything that sounds like you. Two or three is enough.
Nothing selected yet, so all 14 clusters are shown below.
Start with these
Nothing matches that search. Try a job title, a cluster name, or a code.
Engineering disciplines in depth
One occupation code covers every job in a discipline. A mechanical engineer designing rooftop air handlers and one designing a missile airframe are both filed as 17-2141, and the wage tables treat them as the same person. The industry code is what actually separates them, so these are the same five disciplines broken out by where the work happens.
How to read the codes on this page
Four separate systems describe the same career from four angles. You do not need all four, but knowing which is which saves a lot of confusion later.
NAUA discipline index
The eleven disciplines under CP.04.04, our Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics branch, each mapped to the Utah cluster it sits closest to and the industry where most of its work is filed.

What an industry code is actually good for
A job title tells you what you would do. A NAICS code tells you where to go looking for someone who will pay you to do it.
Find every employer near you
Business registries and contractor databases are indexed by NAICS, not by job title. Searching 336414 in Utah returns the firms that build what you want to build, including the ones with no careers page.
See who is winning work
Federal contract awards carry a NAICS code. You can see which companies just landed funded work, which is usually months before the job postings appear.
Check pay where you live
The figures on this page are national. The same BLS tables break down by state and metro area, so you can see what the job actually pays along the Wasatch Front.
Filter internships that fit
Large job boards let you filter by industry. Two or three codes turns thousands of listings into a list you can actually read.
Draft for review
Cluster and pathway names are current for school year 2026–2027. Pay figures are U.S. medians from the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025, and should be swapped for Utah-specific figures from the state OEWS tables before this page goes live. Industry codes follow NAICS 2022 and should be checked against the Census file. The CP assignments are proposed, not final.
Where every number on this page came from
Nothing here is our estimate. Each block of data on this page comes from a named public source, listed below with what it supplies and when we pulled it. If a figure looks wrong, follow the link and check it.
